Today, The Doped Up Dollies posted the first song from their debut record “The New Way Out.” The song “Make Your Own Sunshine” is a 60s R&B-inspired high energy jam with some uplifting lyrics. Vocalists Sirae Richardson, Brie McWane, and Erin MacKenzie don’t disappoint, taking solos and delivering the rich harmonies they’re known for. Not surprisingly, the backing band is Big D and the Kids Table featuring Alex Stern, Ben Basile, Derek Davis, David McWane, and Casey Gruttadauria, and the horn section of Andy Bergman, Paul E. Cuttler, Dan Stoppelman. The bari sax on this track rounds out the vibe perfectly!

This debut is the first of a wave of Doped Up Dollies offerings. They promise album artwork is soon to follow, two music videos, and two listening parties in September. The album’s CD release show will be Halloween at Brighton Music Hall. This will be the first time fans who did not fund the kickstarter can pick up their vinyl releases. One side of the 7-inch split contains Big D’s only new track in 2015. Big D singer David McWane assures us that “the merch is wicked cool.”

Spoiler: Big D is also on the Halloween show. Shocker, I know. Dave tells us the bill will potentially have a “normal” Big D set as well as a performance of their 2004  album “How It Goes” in it’s entirety. Last year they played “Good Luck” start to finish and I’m hoping this adds a new element to their Halloween tradition! Openers have not yet been confirmed.

In speaking with David McWane, he went on to tell us that the music for the record was entirely recorded at his cottage in the woods over the course of two days. Nothing was prepared, they simple talked about a song, rehearsed it, and recorded it. The album was finished this past winter–yes, THAT winter. They had to shovel out paths in the snow to get the amps through. Not fun.

Engineering duties were handled by Benny Grotto’s mobile Mad Oak recording rig and was assisted by Steph Durwin. The Doped Up Dollies album concept came up during the Fluent in Stroll recording sessions 6 years ago (remember when those records were new?).  He says “the whole process was relaxed, fun and with friends” and that energy certainly shines through (pun way intended) on this recording. We can’t wait for the full length!
