Supernova Festival Raises Over $12,000 for Alpha Boys School

Like so many other concerts, events, and festivals, the annual Supernova Ska Festival was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Committed to delivering music to the people, the festival has been home to live streamed “Supernova Saturdays” for the past couple of months. In late May, festival founder Tim Receveur announced they would host an online festival. The 2020 Supernova Ska Festival: Quarantine Edition was an enormous success. Live performances and specially recorded videos from over 70 bands from 20 countries were presented along with interviews and conversations. The brilliantly produced live stream was hosted by Pilfers singer Coolie Ranx.

To top it all off, the festival was a fundraiser for the Alpha Institute, also known as the Alpha Boys School, in Kingston, Jamaica. The Alpha Institute provides a caring and committed environment to youth in need of educational, vocational, and life skills training. Specifically, it’s been home to many foundational ska musicians such as Theophilus Beckford, Rico Rodriguez, Tommy McCook, Johnny “Dizzy” Moore, Lester Sterling, and Don Drummond. The fundraising goal of $6,500 was almost doubled, with $12,141 raised at the time of this post. Congratulations to the organizers and all who donated. Consider donating if you haven’t already.

While it might feel like a lot to watch seven hours of video, we encourage you to skip around and introduce yourself to new bands, in addition to watching new songs and performances from the bands you know and love. You’ll be glad you did. Many of the exclusive performances can be found on the Supernova Youtube channelMany of the exclusive performances can be found on the Supernova Youtube channel.

The Supernova International Ska Festival has been rescheduled to June 11-13, 2021, and will take place at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. Supernova Saturdays continue presumably until live shows return.
