AJ+ Video: The Very Black History of Punk Rock

This is just a friendly reminder that all american pop music has its roots in black culture. Hopefully we’re all particularly attuned to the black roots of ska music. This video is reminder that punk rock is no exception with regards to its origins as well as a reminder that the black community is just as involved as ever in punk music.

This 11-minute video is by no means exhaustive but it might be a great conversation starter. It contains interviews with Death, Shawna Shawnté, The 1865, and Greg Tate that are all well worth your time.

If you’re looking for more, I recommend the documentary of the band Death and NPR’s interview with Alice Bag for places to hear more about the experience of people of color in punk rock.
