For the 5th year running, McGreevy’s bar in Back Bay will host the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and their fans for a meet and greet prior to night 2 of their 16th annual Hometown Throwdown, Saturday, December 28th.
McGreevy’s takes the title of “America’s First Sports Bar,” opening as the Third Base Saloon in 1894 by Michael T. “Nuf Ced” McGreevy. Located a mere 1,200 steps from Fenway Park, the bar was re-opened in 2008 by Ken Casey, bassist for Dropkick Murphys. It’s only fitting that Dropkick incorporated McGreevy into their cover of Tessie. It’s worth reading the history over at McGreevy’s website.
It’s a little known fact that the fifth night of Hanukkah is the most important of all the nights, particularly among ska fans. Since medieval times, the festival of lights has been a time to gather, dance, and drink.
Actually that first part is made up and the second part could be true of any holiday. What’s absolutely true is that this year on that fifth night, the Middle East in Cambridge is host to 5 local ska and punk bands: The Takeaways, A Guy Named Guy, and Poor Jeremy from Boston, OFC666 from Turners Falls, MA and RF30 from Concord, NH. (The Stupid Stupid Henchmen were originally on this bill but had to drop off.) Will this evolve into an annual event akin to New Jersey’s Skanksgiving? We’re certainly not opposed to the idea!
This Friday, November 22nd, Westbound Train returns for a late night show at the intimate Middle East Upstairs.
While we all fancy ourselves Spotify and iPod DJs, sometimes you just need the real thing to get the party going. At Rude Sounds, these DJs do just that.
On the third thursday of every month, you can swing by Zuzu Bar in Central Square to catch Selectors Nate EaseUp and Dandy Dan spin early reggae and classic ska. With plenty of room to dance and a little bit of seating, you can definitely unwind from the week to the tunes that got this whole ska thing going.

Earlier this year Less Than Jake announced a return to Fat Wreck Chords for their forthcoming record “See The Light.” It looked like they were headed in this direction anyways with the re-issue of their 2000 record “Borders and Boundaries” originally released on Fat Wreck and the “Greetings and Salutation” compilation.
Reel Big Fish’s 2013 Don’t Stop Skanking Tour kicked off yesterday with support from Five Iron Frenzy, Beautiful Bodies, and Beebs & Her Money Makers. Five Iron Frenzy will support the Boston date while Goldfinger will be supporting several dates on the tour.

Last week we had the great pleasure of sitting down with Ronnie Ragona and Tyler Jones of CT Ska legends Spring Heeled Jack USA. We met up for drinks and falafel at the Middle East where they’ll be playing on Sunday, October 27.
We talked about what the guys have been up to, a bit about how and why they got back together in these last few years, shared stories from the road, and discussed upcoming shows and future recordings!
