October Ska Shows [And Other News]

Originally posted at jacobwakeup.com

So I sort of blinked and noticed there’s a handful of great ska shows in Boston this month. And then I noticed they weren’t all listed anywhere. In the event that Bostonska.com doesn’t get around to posting them, I wanted to pull them all together. So, risking being the new guy who rolls into town and pretends he knows what’s up, I’ve got a very incomplete arbitrarily compiled list! Feel free to add more in the comments that I might have missed.

Obi Fernandez (of Westbound Train) CD Release, Presented by Rogue 617
Middle East Upstairs

with The Pomps, Riki Rocksteady & The Arraignments, The Soul Rebel Project (ex-Mile 21)
18+ $9 Advance / $10 Day of Show
TicketsFacebook Event

Notes: I’ll be there! Obi Fernandez’ new record was streaming on AOL music last week and it’s friggin’ great. Soul, ska, reggae. I’ve also been itching to seen The Pomps since I first heard them, and I haven’t seen Riki Rocksteady since he CT Ska glory days in the early 2000’s. Also I dug Mile 21 so how bad could their new band be.

Tuesday, October 16th, 8 PM

The Aggrolites
Paradise Rock Club

with closing band Easy Star All-Stars
$23 Adv (fees and such) – Tickets

Note: Stoked for Aggrolites. Haven’t seem ’em in a couple years. But, I fear yawns for Easy Star.

Sunday, October 28th, 6 PM

Big D & the Kids Table 16th Annual Halloween Show (or the Boston Skalapalooza Date, depending on who you ask)
Royale

with The Pietasters, Pilfers, Stray Bullets, Spring Heeled Jack USA (acoustic)
$17 advance / $19 day of show
More info and tickets

Note: Again, duh. I’ll be there. I’ve never seen Stray Bullets before! But, this “Royale” looks weird. Strikes me as the kind of place that likes to throw you out by 10 for the dance party.

Saturday, November 3rd, 10 PM

The Toasters
Johnny D’s, Somerville

with Obi Fernandez
$13 adv
More info and tickets

Note: From what I hear, this place is small and will sell out. I haven’t seen the Toasters in a while….

In other news…

While searching for shows, I found out Pressure Cooker has a new record coming out this month! Download the title track from their website or stream it hereabouts:

I’m stoked for this record if this tune is any indication of what’s on it. Sadly, they have no upcoming shows listed. (And how cool is the soundcloud widget! Mouseover the album artwork!)

Also it’s October. Anyone got a line on Bosstones tickets? Throwdown happening? I hear Catch 23 Streetlight is playing in November. And if you thought you’d get through this post without a shameless plug, did I mention I moved to Boston and want to play some ska or reggae? I’ve been in a couple of bands…

UPDATE 10/4/12: The English Beat are playing on Saturday, October 13th, 8 pm at The Natick Arts Center. $45 adv tix. The Other Beat is opened. Tix are kind of expensive but I’ll say I’ve loved The Beat the last 5 times I’ve seen them in the last 5 years. Dave Wakeling is as energetic as ever and has a great band behind him. More info.
